Discover our Distributed Tolling Solutions

End-to-end solution around fully EETS-compliant OBU

In modern commercial vehicles, software and E/E architecture are increasingly taking over tasks previously performed by dedicated hardware. VDO's Distributed Tolling Solution utilizes existing on-board equipment, particularly the Smart Tachograph with precise GNSS data and an integrated DSRC modem for tolling purposes. As a central element of a distributed OBE solution, it significantly increases security and tamper protection and can be connected to the VDO Tolling Proxy Cloud via the plug-and-play VDO Link solution.

Features

  • ITS interface compliant with regulations
  • Bluetooth Low Energy
  • New GNSS receiver with Galileo authentication (OS-NMA)
  • Third internal motion sensor (in addition to KITAS and GNSS)
  • High-precision internal clock for GNSS accuracy
  • SLI37 security controller with increased performance and memory
  • High-performance application controller with larger memory for updates

Vdo-Link-Image-1

Telematic and Tolling Device as Plugin for DTCO

The VDO Link connects intelligent tachographs to online fleet platforms and, as the first plug-and-play solution, enables remote access and real-time processing of tachograph data without permanently installed telematics modules. Thanks to open interfaces, this data can also be used for toll systems, other applications, and value-added services.

Features:

  • Plug-and-play solution by using DTCO front connector
  • HMI: 2LEDs for diagnostics. Tolling HMI via DTCO 4.1 display, buttons and buzzer
  • High sensitivity multi GNSS receiver. GPS / Galileo / GLONASS / BeiDou. Assisted GNSS
  • LTE CAT module with internal antenna
  • For tolling: Use of DTCO internal DSRC
  • HSM: Integrated security module for high end security concept
  • Possibility to update software and firmware over the air
  • Backup battery for supporting peak current and for necessary operation after plug off
  • eSIM
  • Device consists of main body and adaptor

OBU5+-Schräg-Screen-AXX-1-16-9

Tolling On-Board Unit 5+ – a fully EETS-compliant OBU

VDO's integrated tolling solution is based on the Tolling On-Board Unit 5+, an installation-free, plug-and-play device that provides motion, zone, and standstill detection, logging, and event tracking for toll collection. It offers Europe-wide coverage via 4G (with 2G fallback) and a high-precision GNSS module (< 6 m), while the proven DSRC module meets all relevant standards and is homologated in several European countries.

Features

  • Over-the-air (OTA) configuration of all modules.
  • Various energy-saving modes.
  • Precise GNSS positioning.
  • Vehicle standstill detection.
  • Synchronized system time.
  • USB service interface for maintenance.
  • Geofencing for area and zone recognition.
  • DSRC communication for toll systems.
  • Event and trip data logging.
  • Automatic system self-test.
  • HMI display of the active toll domain.
  • Security mechanisms for data protection and tampering.

Tolling Cloud Proxy – The Brain Behind Modern Tolling

VDO offers the Tolling Cloud Proxy, a future-proof, scalable turnkey solution for managing toll devices. The modular SOA platform provides basic services and APIs such as OTA updates, remote configuration, and device management, as well as toll-specific functions like DSRC management, zone geometries, and charge reports. This ensures fleets remain compliant with the latest tolling standards and requirements of European toll domains.

Modular SOA Architecture.

  • The Tolling Cloud Proxy loads the DSRC template into the proxy, sends it to the devices as personalization, and is used by the TSP to create DSRC instances and assign them to the respective zone rules.
  • The zone geometry can be dynamically updated in the proxy and then sent over the air to the devices, while the TSP can create and manage multiple rules for each zone.
  • Charge reports according to ISO 17575-1 are aggregated and transmitted to the TSP via a push API.
  • Over the air Update
Remote SW Updates for the devices installed in the field
  • Remote Config
Update, change and apply new settings to the devices
  • Device Management
Visualize and automatic provision of the devices
  • SIM Management
Activation, deactivation, data consumption and reports
  • API Integration
Custom 3rd party integration for services enrichment
  • Analytics
    Evaluation of platform usage
  • Data Forwarding
Package forwarding to designed customer server
  • Secure Communication
End to end encryption with TLS and certificates
  • Health Status
Constant field monitoring for maximum uptime
  • Protocol customization
Communication setup with customer specific devices
  • Logging
Comprehensive logging for bug fixing and device improvement

Configure and Update Zone Rules

  • Customize device behavior depending on the tolling state.
  • Create DSRC  instances that fit needs for EFC and CCC applications
  • Edit toll domain geometry to create new zones
  • Proxy offers the capability to create  new "rules" to be applied in the future.
  • The system automatically manages the rule transition at date.
  • Add or Remove device subscription to toll domains through the proxy API and keep control of your entire fleet.
